Sunday in Houston, then Thursday against Tampa Bay: Dallas has little time to rebuild a depleted secondary between games. Friday gave the Cowboys more options for that stretch, with Malik Hooker and Shavon Revel practicing fully and receiving no game designation.
That is a different kind of roster development. Joey Porter Jr. brings obvious intrigue after Dallas acquired him from Pittsburgh on Wednesday night, and the Cowboys expect him to play. Hooker and Revel bring something less glamorous: alternatives. A defense that has spent recent weeks replacing missing pieces now has a chance to assemble its secondary from more than the emergency drawer.
Their paths to that report could hardly have been more different.
Hooker’s week was a gradual climb. After missing the previous two games with the forearm injury sustained in the Giants game, he was limited on Wednesday and Thursday. Friday brought full participation and no designation, removing the question of whether Dallas could reasonably consider him for Houston.
It does not establish that he will handle a full workload, or that every concern surrounding the injury has vanished. It does give the coaching staff a veteran option that was unavailable in the two games after his absence began.
Revel made the bigger jump on paper. He sat out Wednesday and Thursday while listed with knee and ankle issues, then practiced fully Friday and also avoided a game designation. That rapid change is encouraging without telling us how the Cowboys will use him.
It is one thing for a player to clear the report; it is another for the staff to decide which assignments and workload are sensible on Sunday.
That distinction keeps Porter’s debut in proper proportion. Stephen Jones indicated after Friday’s practice that Dallas expects Porter to receive snaps, while the coaches have a specific plan that has not been disclosed. Porter’s midweek arrival leaves little time to learn a new defense before his first game.
Two practices can introduce the language without reproducing all the situations he might encounter on Sunday. Hooker’s return and Revel’s clearance make Porter’s introduction easier to manage because he is joining a less depleted group rather than being treated as the whole answer.
The improvement also has a hard boundary. DeMarvion Overshown and Cobie Durant were ruled out after sitting out all three practices with hamstring injuries. Durant also missed the Baltimore game, and Overshown will miss a third straight contest.
Jaishawn Barham has taken over the inside-linebacker work created by Overshown’s absence, with Dee Winters another option. Dallas may have more choices in the back end while still carrying a substantial vacancy in the middle.
Houston’s Friday report prevented the Cowboys from turning that secondary news into a simple confidence exercise. Nico Collins moved from limited participation on Wednesday and Thursday to full work Friday, with no game designation. That does not certify perfect health or guarantee his snap count. It does, however, restore a major weapon to Houston’s planning conversation and makes sloppy communication more expensive for Dallas.
The Texans also had Will Anderson Jr. practice fully on Thursday and Friday without a designation. Houston ruled out Azeez Al-Shaair and M.J. Stewart, while Jadeveon Clowney, Logan Hall, Jake Hansen and Ed Ingram remained questionable.
