Kroger is proceeding with its strategy to close 60 retail locations under various brand banners by the end of 2026. The company initially announced this reduction last year, and recent analysis indicates that more than 35 stores have already ceased operations.
The closures follow multiple court decisions that prevented Kroger from completing its proposed merger with Albertsons. In a separate development announced last month, Kroger agreed to purchase Giant Eagle supermarkets for $1.65 billion.
According to an analysis by MassLive, several closures have taken place in Texas, Virginia, and Wisconsin. The affected brands include Kroger, Fred Meyer, Fry’s Food and Drug, Harris Teeter, Jay C Food Stores, King Soopers, Mariano’s, Pick ‘n Save, and QFC.
Specific closed locations identified in the analysis include a Harris Teeter in Arlington, Virginia, at 950 S. George Mason Drive, and another at 3600 S. Glebe Road, Suite W100. In Texas, Kroger stores have closed at 239 W. 20th St. in Houston, 9325 Katy Freeway in Houston, and 2300 Gessner Road in Houston.
A location in McKinney, Texas, at 2901 Lake Forest Drive is also listed as closed, though a replacement store is planned for 2027.
Other reported closures include a Kroger in Spring, Texas, at 6060 Farm to Market 2920. In Virginia, locations in Abingdon and Charlottesville have shut down. Wisconsin saw the closure of Pick ‘n Save stores in Glendale, Milwaukee, Oak Creek, and South Milwaukee.
