Spence delivered a historic offensive display, hitting three home runs to lead the Houston Astros to a 7-5 victory over the Oakland Athletics. The three long balls marked the first time in his career he has hit multiple home runs in a single game. His performance included a three-run blast in the second inning and solo shots in the seventh and ninth innings.

Game Progression

The Astros jumped out to an early lead in the second inning when Spence’s 429-foot homer to right center drove in Walker and Smith, making the score 3-0. The Athletics responded immediately in the bottom of the third with a three-run home run by McNeil, who sent a ball 379 feet to right center to tie the game at 3-3.

Heim and Langeliers crossed the plate on that play.

Oakland took its first lead in the same inning when Gelof hit a 413-foot home run to center field, putting the A’s ahead 4-3. The Astros tied the game again in the sixth inning when Paredes launched a 394-foot homer to left field.

Walker restored Houston’s lead in the seventh with a solo shot, followed by another three-run advantage in the eighth when he hit a 436-foot home run to left center.

The Athletics attempted a late rally in the eighth inning as Gelof hit his second home run of the game, a 398-foot shot to left center, narrowing the deficit to 6-5. However, Spence sealed the win with his third home run of the night, a 351-foot drive to right field in the ninth inning, extending the final margin to 7-5.

Pitching and Records

Mason Barnett started for the Athletics, pitching six innings and allowing four earned runs on four hits while striking out eight batters. He was charged with the loss after Scott Blewett relieved him. Blewett pitched one inning, giving up one earned run on three hits.

For Houston, Miguel Ullola earned the win by pitching three scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and striking out three batters. Peter Lambert started for the Astros, going 2.2 innings with four earned runs allowed. Bryan King contributed 1.1 scoreless innings with three strikeouts.

Bennett Sousa secured the save situation by pitching 0.2 innings, and Bryan Abreu closed the game with 1.1 scoreless frames for his ninth save.

The victory improved the Houston Astros’ record to 79-80. The Athletics fell to 63-96 on the season. The game was played at Sutter Health Park in Sacramento, California, before a crowd of 9,367 fans.
