Alvarez Delivers the Hammer
Yordan Alvarez provided the decisive blow in the ninth inning, launching a two-run home run to center field to cap a five-hit night and lift the Houston Astros past the Tampa Bay Rays, 10-8, on Saturday at Daikin Park.
Alvarez’s 424-foot blast gave Houston a 10-8 lead, a margin that would hold until the final out. It was Alvarez’s second home run of the game, adding to a 1-2 count earlier in the seventh inning where he hit a sacrifice fly to right field that scored one run.
His first long ball came in the first inning, a 403-foot shot to left center that scored two runs.
Rays Early Fireworks
The Rays struck first in the top of the first inning. Wander Franco’s teammate, one of the early contributors, homered to left center (437 feet) to make it 1-0. However, Houston answered immediately in the bottom of the frame with Alvarez’s two-run shot.
Tampa Bay reclaimed the lead in the second inning when one of their regulars homered to right center (409 feet), driving in a run to make it 3-2. The Rays extended their advantage in the third inning through a series of aggressive plays. A sacrifice fly by one of their key hitters brought in a run, followed by a single that scored another.
The inning featured multiple stolen bases, including a player stealing home twice in the same sequence, pushing the score to 6-2.
Astros Rally Back
Houston began chipping away at the deficit in the fourth inning. An error by the Rays’ shortstop allowed a run to score on a fielder’s choice, making it 6-3, though the official score was recorded as 7-2 due to the specific play mechanics. Diaz then homered to right center (394 feet) with two runs, narrowing the gap to 7-4.
Alvarez added another run in the fifth with a single that scored a teammate.
The Rays pulled ahead again in the seventh, scoring four runs in the frame. DeLuca homered to left (355 feet), followed by sacrifice flies and singles that loaded the bases and eventually tied the game at 8-8. Dezenzo’s single to right field scored the tying run.
Pitching and Final Score
The Astros’ bullpen closed out the game. Josh Hader earned the win, pitching a perfect ninth inning with one strikeout. Bryan King and Cristian Javier provided relief, with Javier allowing one earned run over two innings while striking out four. Hunter Brown started for Houston, giving up six earned runs over four innings.
For Tampa Bay, Drew Rasmussen started, allowing five earned runs in five innings. Craig Kimbrel pitched 1.1 innings without allowing a run, earning the save. Casey Legumina took the loss after giving up two earned runs in no innings pitched.
The final score was 10-8. The Astros improved to 44-47, while the Rays fell to 52-34. Attendance was 37,457.
