Late Surge Decides Close Game

The Sacramento Athletics defeated the Houston Astros 6-5 on Saturday, September 26, at Sutter Health Park. The final score reflected a tight contest that swung decisively in the sixth inning before a late Astros push fell one run short. Attendance at the game was 9,012. The result improved the Athletics' record to 64-96, while the Astros fell to 79-81.

Sixth-Inning Explosion

The game remained scoreless through three innings before Houston took a 1-0 lead in the fourth when Walker homered to left field for a 425-foot shot. The Athletics responded aggressively in the bottom of the sixth. Stefanic singled to center, scoring McNeil and Gelof to make it 1-2.

Heim then singled to left, bringing in Clarke for 1-3. Bolte tripled to center, scoring White and Heim to extend the lead to 1-5. Butler grounded into a fielder's choice, allowing Bolte to score and giving Sacramento a 1-6 advantage.

This sequence accounted for five of the Athletics' six runs.

Astros Fight Back

Houston trimmed the deficit in the seventh when Smith homered to left field for 366 feet, making the score 2-6. The Astros continued their pressure in the eighth. Altuve hit a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Wade Jr. for 3-6.

Diaz singled to left, bringing in Alvarez for 4-6. Paredes scored on a wild pitch by Medina, moving Walker to second and Diaz to third, for a 5-6 margin. Despite the late rally, the Astros could not tie or take the lead.

Pitching Performance

Jacob Lopez earned the win for the Athletics, pitching six innings while allowing two hits, one earned run, two walks, and striking out four batters. He finished with a record of 7-5. Hogan Harris secured the save, pitching one inning while allowing one walk and striking out one, with no hits or earned runs allowed.

For Houston, Hunter Brown took the loss, pitching 5.1 innings with two hits, one earned run, four walks, and four strikeouts. His record stands at 6-4. Bennett Sousa appeared in relief, allowing three hits and three earned runs without recording outs or walks.

Other Astros relievers included AJ Blubaugh, Logan VanWey, and Joshua Hendrickson. The Athletics used Seth Johnson, Geoff Hartlieb, and Luis Medina in addition to Lopez and Harris.
