Series Decided in Houston

The Chicago White Sox clinched their first playoff series victory since 2005 by sweeping the Houston Astros in two games. With a 7-3 final score on Wednesday, September 30, at Daikin Park, Chicago secured the AL Wild Card round 2-0. The win advances the White Sox to the next stage of the postseason, while the Astros are eliminated from playoff contention.

Early Offense Sets Tone

Chicago’s offense exploded immediately in the first inning against starting pitcher Hunter Brown. Teel singled to right, allowing Antonacci to score for a 1-0 lead. Benintendi followed with a single to center, scoring Teel and putting Vargas on third.

Vargas crossed the plate on a throwing error by center fielder Spence, extending the lead to 3-0. Peters added another run with a single to right, making it 4-0.

Houston responded in the same frame when Peña homered to left-center, cutting the deficit to 4-1. The White Sox offense remained dominant as Meidroth launched a three-run homer to left in the sixth inning, scoring Acuña and Peters to push the margin to 7-3.

Houston’s Altuve hit a solo home run to left in the fourth inning, and Smith homered to left in the second, but those efforts were not enough to overcome Chicago’s early surge.

Pitching Performance Analysis

Chicago’s bullpen was nearly flawless after the initial innings. Sean Burke started for the White Sox, pitching 4.0 innings with 8 strikeouts but allowing 3 earned runs on 4 hits. Huascar Brazoban entered in relief, pitching 0.1 innings and recording 1 strikeout while allowing 1 hit without giving up any runs.

Anthony Kay earned the win (1-0) by pitching 0.2 innings with no hits allowed but 1 walk. Jordan Hicks and Erick Fedde each pitched 2.0 scoreless innings, combining for 6 strikeouts. Hicks retired the side in order with 3 strikeouts, while Fedde also recorded 3 strikeouts without allowing a hit or a walk.

Houston’s pitching staff struggled to contain Chicago’s bats. Hunter Brown took the loss (0-1) after just 0.2 innings, surrendering 5 hits and 3 earned runs. AJ Blubaugh pitched 1.1 scoreless innings with 2 strikeouts.

Peter Lambert allowed 2 earned runs on 0 hits in 3.0 innings but walked 2 batters. Bryan Abreu pitched 2.2 innings, allowing 1 run on 1 hit while striking out 6. Josh Hader closed the game with 1.1 scoreless innings, recording 1 hit and 1 strikeout.

Final Records

The victory improves Chicago’s record to 84-78. The loss drops Houston to an even 81-81. The White Sox will now advance in the playoffs, while the Astros’ season ends here.
