Dominant First Half Sets Tone
The Houston Cougars established control early and maintained it throughout, securing a 42-28 victory over the Georgia Southern Eagles on Saturday, September 26, 2026. The decisive factor was quarterback Conner Weigman, who threw for four touchdowns and ran for two more, orchestrating an offensive display that Georgia Southern could not match.
Houston opened the scoring in the first quarter with a quick strike. Weigman connected with Koby Young on a 22-yard pass to make it 14-0 after another score by Weigman himself on a 5-yard run. The Cougars' defense and offense worked in tandem to keep Georgia Southern off the board in the opening period, building a commanding 14-0 lead before the second quarter began.
The Eagles responded with offensive firepower of their own in the second half. Max Johnson led Georgia Southern’s attack, completing 26 of 38 passes for 284 yards and three touchdowns. Wide receiver Alex Taylor was the primary target, hauling in six catches for 119 yards and two scores, including a 40-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter to tie the game at 14-14.
Houston Pulls Away in Second Quarter
Despite Georgia Southern tying the contest, Houston immediately regained momentum. Weigman added another rushing touchdown from one yard out, followed by a two-yard pass to Traville Frederick Jr., pushing the Cougars ahead 28-14 at halftime. The Cougars' ability to score efficiently in short-yardage situations proved critical in maintaining their lead.
The third quarter saw both teams exchange touchdowns. Weigman found Trent Walker for a 23-yard touchdown, extending Houston’s lead to 35-14. Walker finished with six receptions for 83 yards and one touchdown. Georgia Southern responded with another Taylor catch, this time from 23 yards out, bringing the score to 35-21.
