A Decisive Second-Half Surge

No. 20 Houston Cougars (4-1) defeated the visiting UCF Knights (3-2) 27-17 on Saturday, October 3, at TDECU Stadium. The outcome was sealed by a remarkable offensive explosion from Houston quarterback Conner Weigman, who accounted for three touchdowns in the latter half of the contest.

Although UCF held a 10-0 lead entering the third quarter, the Cougars completely shifted the momentum, outscoring the Knights 27-10 in the final two periods to secure the win. The game drew an attendance of 25,593 fans to the Houston venue.

Scoring Sequence and Momentum Shift

The Knights controlled the first half, building their initial advantage through efficient passing and kicking. In the first period, Keyone Jenkins connected with Josh Derry on a 13-yard pass for a touchdown, giving UCF a 7-0 lead. UCF extended their cushion in the second quarter when Will Stone connected on a 30-yard field goal, making it 10-0.

The Knights added another touchdown in the third quarter when Jenkins rushed five yards for the score, pushing the lead to 17-0. However, the tide turned immediately after. Weigman struck back with a 19-yard rushing touchdown, followed shortly by a one-yard run for the score, closing the third quarter with Houston trailing 17-14.

Weigman’s Offensive Masterclass

The fourth quarter belonged entirely to Houston. Weigman capped his hat trick with another one-yard rushing touchdown, flipping the lead to Houston 21-17. The Cougars then extended their advantage through the kicking game.

Jonathan Dimas successfully converted a 40-yard field goal to make it 24-17. In the closing moments, Dimas added a 46-yard field goal to finalize the 27-17 victory. Weigman’s performance was the centerpiece of the game, as he not only found the end zone repeatedly but also managed the passing attack effectively.

His rushing ability was a significant factor in the victory, complemented by receiving support from Patrick Overmyer, who hauled in six passes for 76 yards.
