A recent study from the Federal Reserve has revealed that consumer sentiment, alongside the tone of news coverage, can forecast recessions with similar accuracy to traditional economic data such as jobs and prices. This research was conducted by economists from the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, including Nicolas Petrosky-Nadeau, Yeji Sung, and Daniel J. Wilson.
The working paper, titled "Do Vibes Predict Recessions?", shows that a model based solely on sentiment outperformed one based on hard data when looking one month ahead. It also performed comparably to a model that combined both types of data. While the sentiment model was quicker to identify rising recession risks, it also generated more false alarms.
The researchers emphasized that sentiment data serves as a valuable complement to traditional indicators rather than a replacement. Their analysis included various sentiment measures, such as consumer surveys and an economic-policy uncertainty index, covering data from August 1999 to May 2026, which encompasses three recessions.
