Baylor University’s football team is facing a challenge as wide receiver Taz Williams Jr. recovers from a broken collarbone sustained during fall camp. Head coach Dave Aranda confirmed that Williams will undergo surgery but is expected to return in a few weeks. In the meantime, his absence creates an opportunity for other receivers to step up as the season approaches.
Ashton Jones, a six-foot-four redshirt freshman, is one of the players expected to take on a larger role. His size and ability to make contested catches could make him a valuable asset in the passing game, particularly in deep routes. With Williams out, wide receivers coach Dallas Baker will have the chance to evaluate Jones’s potential to become a significant contributor in the offense.
Jadon Porter is another candidate to fill the void left by Williams. Having played in 11 games last season and recorded nine receptions for 85 yards and a touchdown, Porter brings experience and familiarity with the offensive scheme. His efficiency as a slot receiver is likely to be crucial for maintaining the team’s passing effectiveness during Williams’s recovery.
Additionally, true freshman London Smith has a chance to prove himself as a dynamic playmaker. Known for his athleticism and speed, Smith's development could be accelerated by the increased practice opportunities he will receive in Williams's absence. While relying on a freshman comes with risks, it also presents a chance for Smith to demonstrate his capabilities early in his college career.
