Baylor University football coach Dave Aranda is facing significant pressure as he prepares for the 2026 season, following a disappointing 5-7 record last year. Aranda's future with the team was uncertain after the resignation of the school's athletic director late last season, but he remains at the helm for this upcoming year.

Entering his seventh season, Aranda will lead a team that features a new quarterback, DJ Lagway, who transferred from Florida. Alongside Lagway, the Bears are integrating several new receivers and a new defensive coordinator, Joe Klanderman, who comes from Kansas State.

The team has struggled in recent years, with a record of 22-28 since achieving a school-record 12 wins and a Big 12 title in 2021.

Last season, Baylor's defense allowed an average of 32.6 points per game while the offense scored 31.1 points, leading to a high number of turnovers. Aranda has entrusted Klanderman with defensive play-calling duties as the team looks to improve its performance.

Despite the loss of leading rusher Bryson Washington to Auburn, Baylor's running back group remains deep and talented. Caden Knighten, who rushed for 469 yards last season, and Dawson Pendergrass, returning after missing last year due to injury, are expected to play key roles. Pendergrass had a strong freshman season in 2023, running for 338 yards and five touchdowns.

However, the Bears face challenges with a lack of experience at the receiver position, having lost their top five receivers from last season. New additions include transfers Dre’lon Miller and Gavin Freeman, while Jadon Porter returns as the only receiver with any notable production last year.

Baylor's schedule includes significant matchups against Auburn on September 5, TCU on October 17, and No. 12 Texas Tech on November 21. As the season approaches, it remains to be seen if Aranda can turn the program's fortunes around and secure his position as head coach.

Further details regarding the team's preparations and player performances are not yet clear.
