Tommy Castellanos’ role at Texas Tech remains unsettled after two games, with the veteran quarterback contributing three touchdowns while also throwing an interception during last week’s loss to Houston. The Red Raiders have used him alongside starting quarterback Will Hammond in a role that has produced mixed results.
Castellanos joined Texas Tech after the transfer portal closed and Brendan Sorsby’s situation had been resolved. The team needed an experienced backup while Hammond continues to recover from a torn ACL, according to Red Raiders Wire.
Texas Tech coach Joey McGuire started Castellanos against Houston, but his first play ended with an interception while he tried to throw the ball out of bounds. Castellanos later returned to the game in a red-zone package and scored on a 3-yard run in the second quarter.
McGuire said after the game that Hammond remains the team’s starting quarterback and that Castellanos will continue to have specific packages. The article said Castellanos had initially arrived in Lubbock late in preseason camp as an emergency option behind Hammond.
Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde listed Castellanos’ season as one of 10 questions that could shape the college football season. Forde questioned the decision to start him against Houston, while acknowledging that using Castellanos in limited situations, particularly near the goal line, could remain important for Texas Tech.
