Baylor will be without defensive tackle Devonte Tezino for the rest of the season after he injured his leg during the Bears' Saturday victory over Prairie View A&M.
Tezino had quickly become a key part of Baylor's defensive front. He registered two sacks against Auburn, and coach Dave Aranda identified him after the opener as likely the team's top interior defensive lineman.
"I just feel horrible for him," Aranda said, citing the work Tezino had put in before the injury and saying Baylor would miss him.
The loss leaves Baylor relying more heavily on its other interior linemen. Aranda specifically mentioned Braylen Jackson, who has contributed against the run and could receive additional opportunities. Aranda described Jackson as a physical defender who produces movement at the line and gives the team confidence in run-defense situations.
Baylor entered the season with its defensive line viewed as one of its strongest units, but Tezino's absence will put that group’s depth under pressure after two games. The remaining linemen will be asked to help maintain the unit's pass rush and physical play, not simply replace his playing time.
