After outside linebacker JJ Faulk sustained a shoulder injury during preseason camp, Chris Murray has emerged as a significant contributor for Auburn's defense. The fifth-year senior is making a strong case for playing time as the team prepares for its season opener against Baylor on September 5.
Auburn head coach Alex Golesh expressed enthusiasm about Murray's performance, noting that he has been gradually reintegrated into practice after missing the initial days of camp. "He's been phenomenal here the last week... He's 100% now," Golesh said, highlighting Murray's maturity and steady presence as he competes for a starting position.
Murray, who began his college career at TCU in 2021, transferred to Auburn after playing two seasons at Sam Houston State. In the 2025 season, he recorded 15 tackles, 3.5 sacks, and 3.5 tackles for loss. His eligibility for a sixth year was granted by the NCAA earlier this year, allowing him to join the Tigers during the spring practice period.
In a recent practice, Murray emphasized the importance of his experience, stating, "I can teach these young guys how to move, how to maneuver." He expressed a desire to support younger teammates while also advancing his own career.
As Auburn concludes its mock game week with a team scrimmage on Saturday, the coaching staff is closely evaluating Murray and other candidates for the outside linebacker position, including Da'Shawn Womack and Jared Smith. The competition remains intense as the team gears up for the upcoming matchup against Baylor.
