The Dallas Cowboys are facing tough roster decisions, particularly at the running back position, as coach Brian Schottenheimer confirmed that Jaydon Blue and Phil Mafah, both drafted in 2025, have been cut from the team. The Cowboys opted to retain Javonte Williams, Malik Davis, and Hunter Luepke instead.
In a move to bolster their roster, the Cowboys claimed running back Emari Demercado off waivers from Kansas City. Schottenheimer highlighted Demercado's special teams capabilities and his previous connection with offensive coordinator Klayton Adams, who coached him for two seasons in Arizona.
Regarding the potential return of Blue and Mafah to the practice squad, Schottenheimer stated that there are no guarantees. He expressed uncertainty, saying, "We said to both those guys that we weren't sure that we were," indicating that the team is still evaluating their options.
The Cowboys have signed 13 players to their practice squad, including running back Israel Abanikanda. An NFL team can have up to 16 players on the practice squad, with an exemption for 17 if they have a player in the International Player Pathway program, which applies to defensive tackle Dayo Odeleye on the Cowboys' squad.
