The Dallas Cowboys started the 2026 NFL season with a 28-20 loss against the New York Giants, prompting coach Brian Schottenheimer to focus on execution problems and errors involving several young players.
Schottenheimer said Dallas did not perform to its expectations and described the team’s overall showing as "pretty poor." He also said the Cowboys did not begin the game quickly enough on offense or defense and characterized the defeat as a humbling experience.
New York received a strong performance from rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart, who passed for 230 yards and ran for another 54. His ability to move outside the pocket created challenges for a Dallas defense that had difficulty finishing plays.
The Cowboys were also penalized eight times for 85 yards. A taunting call against Javonte Williams after a touchdown moved Brandon Aubrey’s extra-point attempt back. Schottenheimer said Dallas had discipline problems that it needed to correct and said he accepted responsibility along with the players.
Dak Prescott completed 22 of 34 passes for 175 yards, with touchdown throws to CeeDee Lamb and Williams. Williams also scored on a rushing play, but Dallas could not overcome its penalties and other mistakes. The Cowboys had allowed an NFL-high average of 30.1 points per game in 2025, and the team entered this season with new defensive personnel and expectations for improvement.
