The Cowboys are preparing for multiple playing-surface conditions before their Sunday game against the Ravens at Maracanã Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, while the NFL has indicated the matchup will proceed as scheduled.
Defensive tackle Kenny Clark said he is ready to play regardless of the field. Clark previously played in São Paulo with the Green Bay Packers, where the surface became slippery enough that Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley changed cleats during the game. Clark used footwear with seven studs for additional traction and later described the field as soft and muddy.
"Regardless, we're going out there to play a game on Sunday," Clark said. "I'm ready to play."
The NFL has been tracking the Maracanã surface. Nick Pappas, the league's field director, told The Dallas Morning News that league personnel had visited the site throughout the month and were closely monitoring the field and related conditions.
The Cowboys are expected to see the surface for the first time Saturday. Coach Brian Schottenheimer said the team will bring several cleat choices, although individual players may prefer particular options. He said the team will have additional footwear available if adjustments become necessary, without requiring players to use a specific type.
