The Dallas Cowboys announced on Monday that they have waived quarterback Joe Milton as part of their roster adjustments ahead of the regular season.
Milton joined the Cowboys in April 2025 after a trade with the New England Patriots, where Dallas sent a fifth-round pick for him. He had been competing for the backup quarterback position against Sam Howell throughout the offseason.
Earlier on the same day, the Cowboys claimed running back Emari Demercado off waivers from the Kansas City Chiefs, making Milton's release a corresponding move to accommodate Demercado on the 53-man roster.
During the 2026 preseason, Milton played in three games, completing 29 of 43 passes for a total of 378 yards, along with three touchdown passes and no interceptions. He also contributed with 12 carries for 14 rushing yards and one rushing touchdown.
Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer expressed confidence in both Milton and Howell as capable backups. He recalled a conversation with Milton earlier this offseason, noting Milton's self-assurance about his abilities despite the team's competition for the backup role. Schottenheimer acknowledged the complexity of the Cowboys' offensive system, which can be challenging for players to learn.
Milton had previously stated that he felt more comfortable with the Cowboys' offense after a full season and training camp, emphasizing his understanding of the playbook. He recognized that the decision regarding the backup quarterback was beyond his control and focused on performing well in his role.
