The Dallas Cowboys are currently evaluating their backup quarterback options as they approach the NFL roster deadline on August 30. The competition is primarily between Sam Howell and Joe Milton, both of whom have shown promising performances during the preseason.

Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer acknowledged that Howell initially held an advantage over Milton in the competition. However, recent performances by Milton have made the decision more challenging. "If you would just take the training camp competition, it's probably neck and neck, and Sam maybe a little bit ahead," Schottenheimer stated.

He noted that Milton has delivered strong showings in recent games, intensifying the competition for the backup role behind Dak Prescott.

As the Cowboys consider their options, they face a significant decision regarding their quarterback depth. Retaining three quarterbacks could mean cutting a player from another position where they may need additional support. USA Today’s Ben Grimaldi predicts that Howell may be released, with Milton likely to be named the backup quarterback.

Grimaldi pointed out that Howell's past performance may not have been the sole factor in his potential release, as Milton's impressive play has shifted the dynamics of the competition.

Howell, a former starter for the Washington Commanders, has played in 20 NFL games, including 18 as a starter. He signed a fully guaranteed one-year contract worth $2.5 million, meaning the Cowboys would incur that cost if they decide to cut him from the roster.

ESPN’s Todd Archer has suggested that the Cowboys might opt to keep both quarterbacks, given their solid performances. However, he also indicated that Howell currently has the edge in the competition. The final decision will likely hinge on the outcomes of the upcoming training camp week and the preseason finale against the New Orleans Saints.

Further details about the Cowboys' final roster decisions are expected as the deadline approaches.
