Dozie Ezukanma, a wide receiver for TCU, spent three days in the hospital due to a brain bleed, concussion, and other injuries following an alleged assault by teammate Jacob Fields. The incident took place on August 13 at the Walsh Athletic Complex.
According to an arrest warrant affidavit, Fields reportedly punched Ezukanma in the head while he was seated and looking at his phone, then kicked him in the back of the head, causing Ezukanma to lose consciousness. After experiencing severe headaches and ringing in his ears, Ezukanma was taken to the hospital, where scans confirmed a brain bleed, leading to his transfer to the ICU.
He was discharged on August 16 with a strained AC joint in his shoulder.
Jacob Fields was dismissed from the team on August 18 and has been charged with aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury. He turned himself in to authorities and was released from Tarrant County Jail on a $50,000 bond. Fields expressed remorse in a text message to TCU police, stating he made an emotional decision and offered to cover Ezukanma's hospital bills.
TCU head coach Sonny Dykes remarked on the situation, noting it was out of character for both the team and Fields. Ezukanma, a former Keller Timber Creek High School student in Fort Worth, was anticipated to be a starting wide receiver for the upcoming season, with TCU's next game scheduled against Grambling on September 12.
