Baylor quarterback DJ Lagway is unlikely to play against Louisiana Tech as he continues recovering from an ankle injury, but his status is reportedly improving ahead of the team’s Big 12 opener against Colorado on Sept. 26.

Lagway sustained a high-ankle sprain during Baylor’s 17-16 season-opening loss to Auburn. He remained in that game and finished with 333 passing yards, two touchdowns and one interception. He later missed Baylor’s game against Prairie View A&M.

Nate Bennett started in Lagway’s place against Prairie View A&M and completed 24 of 36 passes for 314 yards in Baylor’s 44-3 win. Bennett also threw three touchdown passes and scored once on the ground. If Lagway cannot play against Louisiana Tech, Bennett is expected to make his second straight start.

Baylor coach Dave Aranda said Lagway felt good during a Sunday practice, and the quarterback was expected to take part in team practices during the week. On3’s Pete Nakos reported that Lagway is trending toward being available when Baylor begins Big 12 play against Colorado.

Colorado is scheduled to visit Baylor on Sept. 26, with kickoff set for 10 a.m. Mountain Time. The Buffaloes will play Northwestern before that matchup, while Baylor is scheduled to face Louisiana Tech in its final nonconference game. The details of Lagway’s recovery beyond the reported practice participation were not provided. si.com reported the update.
