Malik Davis will miss the Cowboys’ season after suffering a hip injury at practice Friday that required surgery later that evening. The running back will be placed on injured reserve, ending his season before the regular season began.

Davis was taken from the field by cart during an outdoor session at The Star in Frisco. The workout was non-contact and was described as slightly more demanding than a walk-through.

Davis had been expected to serve as the backup to starting running back Javonte Williams. He secured that role after a close competition that continued through much of August, with his training camp and preseason performance earning him a place on the roster.

Cowboys chief operating officer Stephen Jones said on 105.3 The Fan that the injury was a major setback for Davis and the team. The Cowboys had signed Emari Demercado as the third running back for depth and special teams, while Israel Abanikanda remains on the practice squad as another possible option.

With Davis unavailable, the Cowboys could use Demercado and Abanikanda in the backfield for Sunday’s game against the Giants. Abanikanda could be elevated for the game or added to the active roster, though the team’s final choice was not yet clear.

Davis rushed for 252 yards and two touchdowns while backing up Williams last season. An undrafted free agent who joined the Cowboys in 2022, he appeared in 12 games as a rookie and ran for 161 yards.

He spent the following two seasons on the practice squad before returning during last year’s training camp, when he made the roster and rushed for 103 yards, the only 100-yard season of his career. The Dallas Cowboys reported the injury and roster move.
