Dallas Cowboys outside linebacker Marist Liufau is set to undergo surgery for a fractured forearm, which will sideline him for several weeks. The injury occurred during a preseason game against the New Orleans Saints on Friday, specifically while he was making a tackle in the first quarter. Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer confirmed the surgery is scheduled for as early as Monday.

Liufau, who has participated in all 34 games since being drafted in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft from Notre Dame, is entering his third season with the Cowboys. This year, he transitioned from inside linebacker to outside linebacker under the new defensive scheme led by Christian Parker.

Liufau expressed gratitude for the support he received during this adjustment, acknowledging the help from coaches and teammates.

Last season, Liufau's role on special teams expanded significantly, with his snap count rising from 35% in his rookie year to 75% (361 snaps) in 2025. He recognized the importance of special teams in securing a roster spot, stating, "special teams is all art and effort." He emphasized the need to put aside personal pride to contribute effectively in this area.

Schottenheimer highlighted Liufau's contributions to special teams, describing his loss as significant. He noted that Liufau was a crucial player across all four special teams units, playing with intensity and reliability. As the Cowboys finalize their roster, Liufau's injury could influence their decisions, especially since they can designate up to two players for return after missing at least four weeks of the season.

Further details regarding Liufau's recovery timeline and the Cowboys' roster adjustments are not yet clear.
