Florida State coach Mike Norvell said the Seminoles are turning to their next challenge after a loss to SMU, with a road game against No. 10 Alabama scheduled for Saturday in Tuscaloosa. Florida State is 1-1, and Norvell said the SMU result did not reduce his confidence in the team.
The program is also operating under interim athletic director Bruce Warwick after Michael Alford was fired. Norvell commended Alford and his wife, Laura, for their work with Florida State, and called Warwick an experienced professional. The players had Monday off, and Norvell said he planned to address the leadership change with them Tuesday.
Two freshman linebackers, Izayia Williams and Daylen Green, are unavailable for the rest of the season. Veteran linebacker Blake Nichelson is expected to play again this year, but his absence will last an extended period. Norvell said those openings could give other defensive and special teams players opportunities.
Norvell said quarterback Ashton Daniels had a strong week, including his practice habits and focus on controllable areas. He described Alabama's defense as fast and explosive, with a bigger front than last season, and said Florida State must win individual matchups, maintain offensive balance and create big plays. Alabama quarterback Keelon Russell's ability to run outside the pocket was also identified as a major threat.
