The Dallas Cowboys are experiencing notable improvements in their defense as they prepare for the 2026 NFL season. Star defensive tackle Quinnen Williams expressed optimism about the team's progress, stating, "The growth, it's like night and day," during a recent interview. This transformation is attributed to new defensive coordinator Christian Parker and a shift in mindset among players and coaches.
Williams highlighted the benefits of facing one of the league's top offenses during practice, which has enhanced the defense's development. He acknowledged that while there is still work to be done, the team is heading in the right direction. Last season, the Cowboys struggled defensively, ranking last in the NFL in opponent passing yards and points allowed, and 30th in total yards.
In contrast, the Cowboys' defense had previously performed well under former coordinator Dan Quinn, who left the team after the 2023 season. The organization replaced Matt Eberflus with Parker, who previously served as the Philadelphia Eagles' passing game coordinator. This marks Parker's first role as an NFL defensive coordinator.
Williams, a 2022 All-Pro and four-time Pro Bowler, recently signed a three-year extension worth $105.9 million. He joined the Cowboys in a trade with the New York Jets during the 2025 season and had a productive year, recording 2.5 sacks and three forced fumbles.
In addition to Williams, the Cowboys have made several key acquisitions, including safety Jalen Thompson and cornerback Cobie Durant, as well as veteran linebacker Rashan Gary. They also selected safety Caleb Downs and linebacker Malachi Lawrence in the 2026 NFL Draft.
