Caleb Downs and Jaishawn Barham, two of the Dallas Cowboys’ top selections in the 2026 draft, are scheduled to start on defense against Baltimore on Sunday. Malachi Lawrence, another 2026 draft pick, is expected to contribute as a key rotational player.
Head coach Brian Schottenheimer said Dallas planned for its young players to receive significant playing time. He also acknowledged that the rookies will have mistakes to work through as they continue developing.
Schottenheimer described Downs as an elite performer and said Barham has produced major turnovers on his defensive snaps. He also praised Lawrence’s ability to pressure opposing quarterbacks. Schottenheimer added that the Cowboys will depend on the other 10 defenders to help cover for mistakes when they occur.
The increased responsibility for the rookies comes as Dallas deals with several defensive players missing practice. Defensive backs Cobie Durant, Malik Hooker and P.J. Locke, along with linebacker DeMarvion Overshown, did not participate in Wednesday’s session.
Dallas is scheduled to play Baltimore on Sunday. Further details about the players’ absences were not provided.
