Sam Erger, the head coach of the volleyball team at Southern Methodist University, faced a two-game suspension due to a violation regarding communication, as stated by a university spokesperson. This self-imposed suspension by SMU Athletics occurred on August 29 and 30.
During Erger's absence, the Mustangs secured victories against Colorado State and UC Davis. The team won the match against Colorado State in four sets, followed by a five-set win over UC Davis. Notably, sophomore outside hitter Suli Davis achieved her first double-double in the match against Colorado State, recording 22 kills and 14 digs.
Erger returned to coach the team on September 2 in a match against TCU, where the Mustangs lost in five sets. In that game, Davis led the team again with 15 kills, while freshman Bojana Ambulija made a strong debut with 13 kills.
Erger has been leading the SMU volleyball program since February 2022, guiding the team to three NCAA Tournament appearances, including a Sweet Sixteen finish in 2025. The Mustangs recorded a program-record tying 27 wins last season.
Next, the Mustangs will compete against the University of San Diego, with the match set to be streamed on ESPN+. Details surrounding the nature of the communication violation remain undisclosed due to NCAA confidentiality regulations.
