The Houston Texans received positive news regarding offensive tackle Braden Smith, who is expected to miss only a few weeks due to a plantar fascia injury in his foot.
Reports from KPRC 2's Aaron Wilson and NFL Network's Ian Rapoport indicate that while Smith's injury is concerning, it is not deemed serious and he avoided a long-term setback during a joint practice with the Carolina Panthers.
Smith, who signed a two-year, $20 million contract with the Texans this offseason, was anticipated to fill the starting right tackle position. However, his injury has created additional challenges for the team's offensive line strategy. ESPN's Adam Schefter noted that Smith's absence is projected to last a few weeks, which is preferable compared to more severe alternatives.
In light of Smith's injury, the Texans may not need to rush his return, as they have capable replacements. Trent Brown, a former Pro Bowl tackle, is currently positioned as the starting right tackle. Additionally, the team is reportedly satisfied with the development of Blake Fisher, a third-year tackle who has made 15 career starts.
