The Houston Texans have moved linebacker Jake Hummel to injured reserve with a groin injury, removing him from the lineup for at least the next four games. The transaction comes before Houston's Week 3 game against the Indianapolis Colts.
Hummel's injury dates to the Texans' game against the Cincinnati Bengals. He did not participate in six consecutive team practices after the issue emerged, and the team's Friday injury report had already indicated he would miss at least one additional game.
His absence is scheduled to include the Colts game, a Week 4 home matchup with the Dallas Cowboys, and road games against the Tennessee Titans and Jacksonville Jaguars in London. The source did not provide a timetable beyond the minimum four-game absence.
Hummel's placement gives Houston four linebackers on injured reserve or the physically unable to perform list. E.J. Speed has a long-term quad injury that could keep him out for the 2026 season, K.C. Ossai began the season on injured reserve, and Henry To'oTo'o went to injured reserve after hurting his shoulder in the fourth quarter against the Buffalo Bills in Week 1.
The report said Hummel has primarily contributed on special teams and has played 150 defensive snaps during his career. With him unavailable, five linebackers are healthy and on the 53-player roster for the Colts game: Azeez Al-Shaair, Jake Hansen, Jamal Hill, Wade Woodaz and Aiden Fisher. Hill recently joined the active roster from the practice squad, while Woodaz and Fisher are first-year draft picks.
