The Houston Texans have announced that they will not engage in contract negotiations with quarterback C.J. Stroud once the season begins. General manager Nick Caserio stated that if an agreement is not reached before the Texans' season opener against the Buffalo Bills on September 13, all discussions will be paused until the following offseason.
Stroud, who was selected second overall in the 2023 NFL Draft, has already had his fifth-year option picked up by the team, ensuring he remains under contract through 2027. Caserio had indicated earlier in training camp that there was a possibility of finalizing an extension, but no deal appears to be on the horizon at this time.
The 24-year-old quarterback has a record of 28 wins and 18 losses, leading the Texans to the playoffs in each of his first three seasons.
Stroud earned the title of AP NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2023, and in 2025, he achieved a career-high completion rate of 64%, helping the Texans finish the season with a 12-5 record and advance to the divisional round of the playoffs. However, his postseason performance included a challenging game against New England, where he threw five interceptions in a 28-16 loss.
