The Dallas Cowboys have finalized their 53-man roster, making several surprising cuts as they prepare for the upcoming season. Among the notable releases were quarterback Joe Milton III, who served as the No. 2 quarterback last season, and Jaydon Blue, a fifth-round pick from 2025.
Despite impressing during the preseason, Milton was unable to secure his position, while Blue's lack of development led to his release and subsequent signing with the Philadelphia Eagles' practice squad.
Head coach Brian Schottenheimer emphasized the difficult nature of roster decisions, highlighting the human element involved when players are cut. However, he stated that these choices are made with the team's overall vision in mind. Schottenheimer has made it clear that he is focused on building a strong team culture, moving away from the previous approach where talent alone dictated roster spots.

Schottenheimer challenged players like Blue and Phil Mafah to step up, but it was Malik Davis who rose to the occasion, securing the RB2 position. On the defensive side, the Cowboys have undergone significant changes under first-year defensive coordinator Christian Parker. The team no longer relies on a single star player, or 'war daddy,' as they did in the past. Instead, they plan to utilize a collective approach to defense, focusing on a group of players including Quinnen Williams, Kenny Clark, and Rashan Gary to create pressure on opposing quarterbacks.
