The Dallas Cowboys faced the challenging task of trimming their roster to the required 53 players ahead of the NFL deadline this weekend. Among the notable players waived were second-year running back Jaydon Blue and former second-round pick Sam Williams.

To make room for newly claimed running back Emari Demercado, the Cowboys also waived quarterback Joe Milton III, which surprised many given his strong preseason performance.

Despite these cuts, the Cowboys retained several players by signing them to their practice squad. The initial roster includes running back Israel Abanikanda, wide receivers Jordan Hudson and Anthony Smith, tight end Michael Trigg, and offensive tackles Wanya Morris and Marcellus Johnson, among others. Morris was brought in from outside the team to bolster the offensive line.

Several players on the practice squad stood out during the preseason, particularly wide receiver Jordan Hudson, who made impressive catches, and defensive tackle Tommy Dunn, noted for his run defense. Linebacker Justin Barron, a converted safety, excelled in coverage, while Curtis Robinson made a name for himself on special teams. Defensive back Reddy Steward also showed promise, building on a solid 2025 season.

In addition to their retained players, some Cowboys cuts found new homes. Julius Wood was claimed by the Miami Dolphins after being one of the top defenders in the preseason. Guard Trevor Keegan signed with the Minnesota Vikings, and Sam Williams joined the Cleveland Browns, where he will have the opportunity to regain his form following ACL surgery.

Jaydon Blue, along with defensive backs Zion Childress and Trikweze Bridges, were signed to practice squads with other teams, including the Philadelphia Eagles, Carolina Panthers, and Cincinnati Bengals, respectively. Further details regarding the implications of these roster changes are not yet clear.
