Prosper's two volunteer committees that advise the town on downtown and community events will each spend part of next week on a narrow question: the rules for carrying open alcoholic drinks in Downtown Prosper.
"Open Container Rules in Downtown Prosper" is listed on the Downtown Advisory Committee's agenda for 5:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 5, in the Town Hall executive conference room. The Community Engagement Committee has a matching discussion item at its 6 p.m.
Wednesday, Oct. 7, meeting in council chambers. Neither posted agenda includes a staff proposal, and both items are listed for discussion rather than a vote. Any change to town ordinances would have to go to the Town Council.
Fall events on the plaza
The discussion comes as the town shifts how it programs the downtown plaza. Draft minutes from an August committee meeting say staff dropped its Prosper on Tap series because of low interest and planned two fall events in its place, now branded Prosper on the Plaza.
The first is a Red River Rivalry Fan Fest on Saturday, Oct. 10, from 1 to 5:30 p.m. at 250 W. First St. The free event asks guests to reserve a spot online.
Organizers list a large viewing screen for the Texas-Oklahoma game, which kicks off at 2:30 p.m., along with football trivia, a DJ, cornhole and other lawn games, a craft tent and a photo booth. Food and nonalcoholic drinks will be for sale, and people are encouraged to bring lawn chairs.
A Friendsgiving-themed gathering follows on Nov. 21.
Staff also told the committees in September that the Dec. 5 Christmas Festival will look different this year because of construction on First Street, according to draft minutes. The plan is to close Broadway entirely and fill it with inflatables, with an ice rink on the plaza.
