Construction on First Street is changing how Prosper stages its Christmas Festival this year, according to draft minutes in the packet for Wednesday's Community Engagement Committee meeting.
At a joint session with the Downtown Advisory Committee on Sept. 2, Director of Community Engagement and Experiences Stephen Tanner told members the town plans to close Broadway entirely and fill it with inflatables, with an ice rink on the downtown plaza and other activities, so that part of the event does not feel cut off from the rest of the festival.
The minutes did not give a date for the festival.
The committee meets at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 7, in the Town Hall council chambers at 250 W. First St., where members are scheduled to approve those minutes.
A series retired, new events added
Minutes from the committee's Aug. 5 meeting, also in the packet, say staff is moving away from the Prosper on Tap series because of low interest. Special Events Manager Kaylynn Stone told members the town was working on two fall events centered on sports and other fall themes to replace it. The second is a Friendsgiving-themed gathering on Nov. 21.
Stone said the events are free but ask people to reserve a spot so the outside vendor knows how many to expect.
Other ideas on the table
The committee's events subcommittee suggested in September that the town consider a clear bag policy for future events, parking and shuttle buses from Prosper High School, and a blue light on the police tent to help families find lost children. The minutes also note an update that the downtown monument signage was nearing completion.
