A study conducted by researchers at Southern Methodist University indicates that fully autonomous vehicles could potentially reduce traffic delays in the Dallas-Fort Worth region by as much as 33 percent, without the need for new highway lanes. This finding is significant for nearby Prosper, Texas, as it highlights the potential benefits of autonomous technology in alleviating congestion.
The research, led by Khaled Abdelghany, involved collaboration with the Texas A&M Transportation Institute and was partially funded by the region's council of governments. In their analysis, the researchers performed 25 simulations projecting traffic conditions in 2045, testing various levels of autonomous vehicle adoption.
In scenarios where all vehicles were driverless, the study found that delays could decrease by up to 33 percent, while the time spent in congested traffic could fall by at least 19 percent.
The underlying reason for this potential reduction in traffic congestion is straightforward. Human drivers often create unnecessary traffic jams through inconsistent braking and spacing. In contrast, autonomous vehicles could alleviate these issues by driving more uniformly and in a coordinated manner, according to Abdelghany.
Currently, Texas is leading the way in the development of autonomous freight transport. Aurora Innovation launched the first commercial driverless delivery service in the United States, operating between Dallas and Houston since late April 2025. These trucks travel along the I-45 corridor without human operators, monitored remotely while transporting various goods.
The choice of the I-45 corridor is strategic, as it handles nearly half of all truck freight in Texas. Aurora has expanded its operations to include a second route from Fort Worth to El Paso and plans to deploy hundreds of trucks.
Other companies, such as Kodiak Robotics, Waymo Via, Gatik, Plus, and Waabi, are also advancing autonomous trucking in the state, solidifying Texas's position as a hub for this industry.
On the passenger side, Waymo has been operating a paid robotaxi service in Austin and expanded its service to select riders in Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio in February 2026, with plans for broader availability later in the year.
While the rise of driverless technology raises questions about job displacement, the reality is that new roles will emerge rather than simply disappearing. Positions will still be necessary for vehicle maintenance, fleet monitoring, and logistics management. Industry estimates suggest that autonomous vehicles could contribute approximately $70 billion to the U.S. GDP and generate around 9 million jobs globally by 2030.
