Oakland Athletics prospect Ryan Lasko remains in stable condition after undergoing surgery to repair a fractured vertebra. The injury occurred during a Double-A baseball game in Frisco, Texas, which is located approximately 6 miles south of Prosper. Lasko, an outfielder for the Midland RockHounds, was involved in a collision with teammate Devin Taylor while attempting to catch a fly ball.
Both players dove for the ball, and Lasko remained motionless on the field immediately after the play.
Dr. Jonathan Poggi performed a spinal decompression and stabilization procedure at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Plano. The operation addressed a fracture in Lasko’s C6–C7 vertebra. Team officials confirmed the surgery was successful and that the player’s condition is stable.
Athletics general manager David Forst issued a statement expressing the organization’s support for Lasko and his family. Forst noted he has been in contact with Lasko’s mother, Patti, to convey the team’s thoughts and prayers. He also thanked athletic trainers Noah Huff and Audy Merrick for their immediate response on the field, as well as the Frisco RoughRiders staff and local paramedics.
Forst stated that the organization is encouraged by medical updates from Dr. Poggi and will dedicate all available medical resources to support Lasko’s recovery. Player development director Ed Sprague is traveling to Frisco to assist, and counseling services will be made available to teammates affected by the incident.
Lasko, 24, was selected by the Athletics in the second round of the 2023 amateur draft out of Rutgers University. He is currently batting .209 with six home runs and 34 runs batted in for Midland this season.
