As the race for the U.S. Senate seat in Texas heats up, both candidates have released their plans aimed at improving affordability for residents. Ken Paxton, the Republican nominee and current state attorney general, introduced his proposal first, named Protecting the Texas Promise.
This plan includes various tax deductions, such as a $25,000 deduction for medical expenses and health insurance premiums, an additional $50,000 deduction for first-time homebuyers, and a $5,000 deduction for healthy lifestyle expenses.
In contrast, Democratic nominee James Talarico, a state representative, has proposed the New American Dream, focusing on wages and debt relief rather than tax deductions. His plan suggests repealing tax breaks for the wealthiest earners to redirect funds to the middle class, implementing universal childcare, and raising the minimum wage. Talarico also emphasizes the need for labor union support and plans to address medical debt.
Both candidates are vying for the seat currently held by Republican John Cornyn, who Paxton defeated in a runoff. The general election is set for Nov. 3, with five other candidates also on the ballot. The race is tight, with Talarico leading by a narrow margin in recent polls.
Neither candidate has provided a full cost estimate for their proposals, and both plans would require Congressional approval to be enacted.
