As the Dallas Cowboys gear up for their second preseason game against the Arizona Cardinals, the competition for the backup quarterback position has become a focal point. With starting quarterback Dak Prescott and most of the first-team players not participating in these exhibition games, the battle for QB2 is intensifying.
In the first exhibition against the Seattle Seahawks, Sam Howell started but was replaced by Joe Milton in the second half. Offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer noted that Howell's consistency in practice led to his starting role, while Milton also performed well, showcasing his command of the offense.
Concerns are also mounting regarding right tackle Terence Steele, who has struggled with consistency during practices and games. Schottenheimer acknowledged that Steele needs to improve his performance, as he has faced challenges in maintaining his technique. Offensive coordinator Clayton Adams emphasized the importance of helping Steele find that consistency, especially as he enters his seventh year in the league.
The competition for Steele's position appears limited, as his backup, Drew Shelton, is a rookie and the swing tackle, Nate Thomas, has not made significant strides.
In the running back position, former University of Texas player Jaydon Blue, along with Phil Mafah and Malik Davis, is vying to back up starter Javonte Williams. Blue had shown promise during training camp but has been sidelined with a shoulder injury, leaving his availability for the upcoming game against Arizona uncertain. The team is currently monitoring his situation.
