The Dallas Cowboys have made two roster moves to strengthen their offensive line following the injury of Pro Bowl guard Tyler Smith. On Wednesday, the team placed Smith on the injured reserve list due to a thumb injury that requires surgery, which is expected to keep him out for four to six weeks.
In response, the Cowboys promoted veteran interior lineman Nick Leverett from their practice squad to the active roster. While Leverett will be available as a backup, T.J. Bass is anticipated to step in as the starting left guard, bringing ten career starts and familiarity with the team's offensive scheme.
Leverett entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2020 and did not see game action until 2021. He remained with the Buccaneers until 2023, starting ten games and participating in a total of 16 contests.
In 2024, he played for both the New England Patriots and Arizona Cardinals, where he worked with Cowboys offensive coordinator Clayton Adams, who was the offensive line coach there.
Dallas initially signed Leverett to a futures contract on January 6, 2026, but he was released during final roster cuts after a strong training camp. He later joined the practice squad and has now been elevated to the active roster.
