BJ Edwards, who previously played for the SMU Mustangs, has committed to the Oklahoma Sooners. This decision follows a three-season tenure at SMU after transferring from the University of Tennessee. Edwards is eligible for an additional season of college basketball due to a five-for-five temporary injunction that grants another year of eligibility to the 2022 recruiting class.
While at SMU, Edwards played under two head coaches and had his most productive season last year, averaging 12.7 points per game along with 5.9 rebounds and 4.9 assists. His defensive skills earned him All-Conference defensive team honors in the ACC, with averages of 2.4 steals per game in the 2024-2025 season and 2.3 steals per game in the 2025-2026 season.
Despite interest from SMU to keep him, Edwards opted to join head coach Porter Moser in Norman. The Sooners are looking to enhance their roster after finishing the previous season with a 21-16 overall record and a 7-11 mark in SEC play, missing out on the NCAA Tournament. The addition of Edwards is anticipated to strengthen the team's competitive edge for the upcoming winter season.
