The Dallas Cowboys have made a surprising decision regarding their quarterback lineup for the preseason opener against the Seattle Seahawks. Approximately 90 minutes before the game, it was announced that Sam Howell will start, with Joe Milton expected to play in the second half.
Jon Machota from _The Athletic_ reported that Howell is set to play the entire first half of the game, while Milton will take over in the second half. This change is noteworthy as Milton had been receiving most of the second-team reps during training camp and was listed as the backup quarterback on the unofficial depth chart.
The Cowboys have been conducting an open competition for the quarterback position, and this decision may indicate that the team feels they have seen enough from Milton since trading for him last year. Howell's introduction into the competition suggests the Cowboys are looking for a strong backup behind Dak Prescott, especially as they aim for a successful 2026 season.
Despite both quarterbacks having opportunities during the offseason and training camp, neither has managed to establish a clear lead in the competition. With three preseason games remaining, the Cowboys will need to make a decision soon regarding who will best support the team if Prescott is injured.
Team owner Jerry Jones has indicated a willingness to make trades or acquire free agents to bolster the roster, emphasizing the team's commitment to competing this season.
