TCU Athletics has restored media credentials for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, concluding a dispute that lasted 17 days. This conflict arose after the newspaper reported on a locker room incident leading to the dismissal of safety Jacob Fields.
On September 4, TCU announced the resolution, citing productive discussions between the university and the newspaper. TCU expressed its respect for the Star-Telegram as an independent news source and indicated a desire to move forward with the upcoming season. Jim Barnes, a representative from TCU, confirmed on social media that reporter Steven Johnson and his team regained full access.
The controversy began with a report by Johnson on August 18, detailing tensions in the locker room and alleging a lack of intervention from coaches. The incident that triggered the report occurred on August 13, when sophomore receiver Dozie Ezukanma claimed he was punched by Fields, resulting in serious injuries. Following the report, TCU revoked the Star-Telegram's credentials, citing threats against Ezukanma.
Fields was later charged with aggravated assault and released on a $50,000 bond after turning himself in to police on August 30. During the credential suspension, Johnson covered TCU's season opener from the stands in Dublin, Ireland.
