Texas Christian University (TCU) has reinstated the media credentials for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, concluding a dispute that lasted for three weeks. This decision follows the newspaper's reporting on an altercation involving former TCU safety Jacob Fields and wide receiver Dozie Ezukanma, which occurred on August 13.
The incident led to Fields' dismissal from the team and his arrest for aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury. Ezukanma reportedly sustained significant injuries, including a brain bleed and concussion, requiring a three-day hospitalization. TCU indicated that both parties had productive discussions, allowing them to move forward together.
Initially, the Star-Telegram's credentials were revoked due to concerns over the narrative created by their reporting, which included an unnamed source suggesting Fields was targeted by teammates. Athletic director Mike Buddie expressed that the reporting resulted in threats against Fields and his family. Despite the credential revocation, a Star-Telegram reporter covered TCU's season opener against North Carolina in Dublin without official access.
With the restoration of credentials, TCU aims to shift focus back to the football season, although the legal matters surrounding Fields and Ezukanma's health remain unresolved.
