The Houston Texans have announced roster changes following injuries to quarterback Graham Mertz and running back Joshua Pitsenberger. Mertz suffered a season-ending knee injury during the preseason opener against the Los Angeles Chargers, while Pitsenberger sustained an ankle injury late in the game.
Mertz's injury was confirmed to be a torn ACL, which he previously experienced in college at Florida in 2024. The Texans are now short-handed at both quarterback and running back positions, leading to the addition of Brett Rypien to the roster to fill the gap left by Mertz.
In addition to Mertz and Pitsenberger, the Texans are dealing with injuries to several other players, including Ja'Marcus Ingram (shoulder), Collin Wright (soft tissue strain), and Jake Hansen (ankle). Despite these setbacks, the team has managed to keep its starting lineup intact, with the exception of linebacker E.J. Speed, who was injured earlier in the offseason.
Head coach DeMeco Ryans and his staff will need to remain vigilant as they navigate through the injuries and prepare for the remainder of training camp. The Texans are expected to make additional roster moves in response to the evolving situation.
