Texas has been recognized as the fourth best state for business in CNBC's 2026 America's Top States for Business study released on July 9, dropping from its previous second-place ranking. Ohio took the top spot, followed by North Carolina, Virginia, and Minnesota, which rounded out the top five.
The state's strong business environment is highlighted by its number one ranking for Workforce and second place for both Economy and Access to Capital. Texas's robust logistics infrastructure, including major ports and highways, also contributes to its status as a leading trade hub.
However, CNBC noted that Texas ranks 49th for Quality of Life, citing high crime rates, inadequate healthcare, and a lack of inclusiveness as significant drawbacks.
Despite the decline in ranking, Texas has a history of strong performance, having ranked near the top since the study began in 2007. The ranking is particularly relevant for North Texas, where a surge in corporate relocations and expansions is taking place.
In 2025, the Dallas Regional Chamber reported 119 corporate moves or expansions in the region, the highest in any U.S. metro area, benefiting communities like Prosper.
