As the new school year approaches, shoppers in Prosper can take advantage of Texas' annual tax-free weekend from August 7 through August 9, 2026. During this period, many back-to-school items will be exempt from state and local sales tax, which can total up to 8.25 percent.

Eligible items include most clothing and footwear priced under $100, student backpacks (up to 10 per purchase), and a specific list of school supplies, each under $100. This tax exemption applies to purchases made in Texas stores as well as online from sellers operating in Texas. However, certain items like jewelry, handbags, watches, computers, and athletic footwear do not qualify.

Additionally, rentals and services for alterations or cleaning are excluded from the tax exemption.

Shoppers do not need to present any coupons or exemption certificates, as the discount will be applied automatically at checkout for qualifying items. A complete list of eligible items can be found on the Texas Comptroller's website.
