The U.S. Postal Service is proposing a price hike for mailing services, which could take effect on July 12, pending approval from federal regulators. This increase includes a rise in the cost of a First-Class Forever stamp from 78 cents to 82 cents.
Other proposed changes include an increase for a metered one-ounce letter from 74 cents to 78 cents and a domestic postcard from 61 cents to 65 cents. Additionally, international postcards and one-ounce international letters would see a price increase from $1.70 to $1.75. The cost for each additional ounce on a single-piece letter is expected to remain at 29 cents.
The Postal Service cites a severe financial crisis and rising operating costs as reasons for the increases. The agency operates without tax funding and relies on postage sales and services for its financial stability. The proposed rates are subject to review by the Postal Regulatory Commission, which oversees Postal Service pricing.
