High school seniors and other Texans weighing college have a fee-free week to send in applications, beginning Monday.
The window opens Monday, Oct. 12, and closes at 11:59 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 18. During that week, Texas residents pay no fee to apply to undergraduate programs at the state's public universities and community colleges, the San Antonio Express-News reported. The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board runs the program, which is held every October and started last fall.
"We are making it easier for Texans to continue their education by removing financial barriers to applying for college and helping more high school students take the next step toward earning a credential and joining the workforce," Commissioner of Higher Education Wynn Rosser said in a statement quoted by the paper.
Who qualifies
The waiver covers Texas residents applying as first-time college students or as transfer students. Generally, a student is treated as a resident if the student or a parent made Texas their permanent home for 12 straight months before the term begins, according to the Express-News. Applicants answer a set of residency questions for each school.
Graduate programs are not included, so applicants to master's and doctoral programs at public universities may still be charged.
