Prosper's annual Veterans Day Honor Run returns to Frontier Park on Saturday morning, Nov. 7, and the memorial it raises money for will be back before the Town Council three days later.

Saturday's run

The event begins at 8 a.m. with a short ceremony led by Mayor David Bristol, according to the town's event page. A 10K, a 5K and a fun run follow, and the morning closes with medals for the top finishers in each race.

Proceeds from the races go to the Prosper Veterans Memorial, and the town directs questions about the run to the Prosper Rotary Club.

Runners who signed up by Oct. 25 were promised an event T-shirt and finisher medal. Parks & Recreation takes questions at 972-569-1160.

A wall for the people who paid for it

The memorial itself sits in a paved circle on the northwest side of Frontier Park. The town and the Prosper Rotary Foundation signed a license agreement in December 2021 that let the foundation build it there, and a staff memo in Tuesday's council packet says the foundation has recently finished construction.

According to the memo, the circle holds a raised center star for the six branches of the military, six granite walls carrying the names of people who lived in Prosper and served, engraved brick pavers with more names, and three flagpoles for the American, Texas and POW flags.

Now the foundation wants to add a donors' wall recognizing those who helped pay for the project. The original agreement only covers the circle, so the proposed first amendment on the Nov. 10 consent agenda would let the foundation build the wall just outside it. Staff wrote that putting the donor recognition outside the circle is meant "to maintain the sacredness" of those honored inside.

The town would pay nothing to design or build the wall, the memo says. Under the existing agreement, though, Prosper pays for utilities and upkeep of the memorial once improvements are complete, and that would include the new wall. The town attorney's firm reviewed the amendment as to form.

Consent items are approved together in one vote unless a council member asks to pull one for discussion. The council meets at 6:15 p.m. Tuesday at Town Hall, 250 W. First St.
