A family of four escaped without injury after a fire believed to have been started by lightning destroyed their Prosper home during Monday night's storms, Prosper Fire Rescue said.
Firefighters were called to the 2600 block of Deep Valley Court at about 11:30 p.m. Monday, according to the department's account reported by FOX 4. Investigators believe lightning struck the house roughly half an hour before anyone called for help.
The family did not realize at first that the house was on fire, the department said, and by the time crews arrived the attic was fully involved. Both adults and both children got out safely. The home was heavily damaged and is considered a total loss.
"While the loss of the home is certainly unfortunate, we are extremely thankful that the entire family escaped safely and no injuries were reported," the department said in a statement quoted by FOX 4.
The strike came as a line of thunderstorms crossed North Texas on Monday night. The National Weather Service's storm reports for the area logged a 48 mph gust measured by the KDTO airport weather station west of Denton at about 10:47 p.m. and, earlier in the evening, a tin roof blown off a building in downtown Nocona in Montague County.
